Chapter 22
Stephanie was being watched as she hung out with her friends outside the mall. She was trying to have fun and forget what today was but it was impossible to shake this feeling.
Her mother had begged her to stay home and watch a movie with her. Sheâd even taken the night off work to spend time with Stephanie since their schedules never matched anymore.
Stephanie had excelled at homeschooling to the point she was taking college courses in preparation for graduating in two years. She wanted to go somewhere far away, as far from New Jersey as possible. Her mother had other plans, preferring her to attend Rutgers or Seton Hall so she was close to home in case something happened.
The argument was invalid when Stephanie knew the only way something terrible would happen was if she were near Chelsea Avenue or someone connected to it.
Mark had been promoted and was working on an undercover task force. He didnât mention where he was working but Steph had a bad feeling it was too close to Long Branch. He hadnât been home in two days but heâd checked in a few times to let her mother know he was safe but busy working.
Regina tapped Steph on the arm. âDo not look to your left but Charlie is checking you out. Holy shit. This is happening.â
âNothing is happening.â Stephanie tried to remain calm but she could feel her heart immediately begin to hammer and her palms were sweaty. She willed her head not to snap in his direction. Charlie was gorgeous. Heâd worked with her the last two years at McDonalds. He was a shy, quiet nerd who talked about videogames and science fiction books to her all shift. She enjoyed his company and theyâd become friends.
Regina and the other girls had goofed on her since Charlie was small and awkward, his face covered in acne and his skin pale and greasy.
Until the end of the school year, when heâd missed three weeks. She didnât remember what he was sick with but heâd come back healthy.
More than healthy. His face had cleared up. Heâd grown two inches. Told her heâd been forced by his new stepfather to stop wasting his life on videogames and start working out. It had done wonders for not only his physical frame but his mindset.
Charlie was suddenly one of the cool kids. There was talk heâd go out for football this coming year. Maybe play basketball. Besides his few hours a week at McDonalds, heâd been working construction with his stepfather, adding to his great build.
Stephanie missed talking to Charlie.
Her friends had all asked her to talk to Charlie for them but sheâd refused. They hadnât paid attention to him for the last two years while sheâd been his friend. While she loved her friends, she knew how shallow they were. They all wanted to be first in line to date him because suddenly he was really cute and built.
Stephanie was also jealous because she felt fat and ugly.
